Summary is another word for “No Change”
“Sunday Confession”
I’m sick of the “Ra Ra” moment!
Books are my life. As a writer, I read for knowledge, experience and entertainment.
But. with most nonfiction business books, I get tired of the same old "Go get 'em, Tiger,” boring summarized ending.
I’m guilty of writing them but no more.
I feel strongly that the end should be more than a summary.
The reader deserves more.
I’ll explain.
In an exceptionally written book a summary is the easy way out.
Readers deserve more than a simple “pat on the back” and a “Go get ‘em’ Tiger-ra ra” cheer for staying with you and reading all your words.
Readers deserve change.
Readers deserve transformation.
Consider this. The reader picks up your book to improve. They are in their current state looking for change.
If your book performs as promised, the reader should have changed along the journey.
They should end up transformed.
Hence, in the end, they don't need an overview.
Its downright insulting because you want your reader to be better and different in the end.
Summary is simply another word for “No Change.”
So, don’t just summarize.
I am never going to again.
Instead, offer thought-provoking advice.
Call your reader to action.
Ask, “What will the reader do now? Now that they've changed, where do they go from here?”
Challenge your reader. Call them to be a better person, do more, or even reach higher.
Put their new change to the test.
The impact of an exceptional book should always go far beyond a simple summary.
